Osaka University of Economics Professor Wataru Takahashi presents the first Australia-Japan Research Centre (AJRC) Seminar Series of Semester 1 2018 entitled ‘Abenomics and the Bank of Japan’, which is co hosted by the Centre for Applied Macroeconomic Analysis at the Crawford School of Public Policy

Although economic performances in Japan have improved, Japan still faces serious economic problems in the future ahead. An increase in corporate profit and employment and rising stock prices are presented as an achievement of Abenomics by its supporters. But these ‘achievements’ don’t necessarily demonstrate the future benefits of Abenomics. This seminar will provide keys points to evaluate Abenomics and discuss the key role the Bank of Japan has played in Abenomics. The seminar will also discuss the problems of Japan’s current institutional framework based on last two decades’ experiences and demonstrate how Japan’s struggle with deflation since the late 1990s are ironically coincident with the enforcement of the Bank of Japan law.

Wataru Takahashi is a Professor at Osaka University of Economics and a Research Fellow at the Research Institute of Economics and Business Administration (RIEB) at Kobe University. He obtained an MPhil in economics from Oxford University in 1984. Previously, he worked at the Bank of Japan for 35 years, including as advisor on international affairs to Governor from 2002 to 2006, responsible for financial cooperation between central banks in East Asia and economic research on the global economy. He was also Director General of the Bank of Japan think tank, the Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies.

A light lunch will be provided.

The AJRC Seminar Series is a forum for researchers to engage on issues relevant to Japan. Topics include, but are not limited to, economics, international relations, politics, and national security. Seminars are typically very frank and early stage studies are most welcome.
